From Hobart
Hobart weekends are valley, island, peninsula or river.
From Hobart, two days usually mean the Huon Valley, Bruny Island, Richmond and the Coal River, the Derwent Valley, or the Tasman Peninsula. The East Coast is a longer ribbon; give it more than a polite dash if you go.

- Island note
- Bruny is a ferry as much as a destination

- East Coast towns want more than a Sunday out-and-back
Hobart is already at the edge of wild country. That is the gift and the temptation. Discover Tasmania spreads valleys, an island, a convict peninsula and an east-coast ribbon around the city. Two days will hold one of those. They will not hold a lap of the island state.
Kunanyi / Mount Wellington sits above town and can be a walk or a lookout inside a Hobart stay. It is not a substitute for choosing a region if you meant to leave the city.
Huon Valley
South of Hobart, the Huon Valley is river towns, orchards and forest edges. Official Tasmania pages treat it as an easy short break: a different light, a slower road, and enough towns to fill a Saturday without racing. Sleep in the valley. Sunday can be a second township or a park walk checked on Parks Tasmania before you go.
The Huon pairs badly with a same-weekend Bruny plan. You will spend the hours you wanted on a river in a queue for a boat.
Bruny Island
Bruny Island is the ferry weekend. Official visitor information describes North and South Bruny, wildlife guidance, and the fact that the island is longer inside than it looks from the map. Two days belong on Bruny, with ferry times written down first.
Saturday is the crossing and one end of the island. Sunday is the other end only if the timetable still loves you. White-wall surf, wildlife and narrow roads are not a reason to improvise a dusk return.
Richmond and the Coal River
North-east of the city, Richmond and the Coal River Valley are heritage streets and a close wine region. This is the shortest “away” and still deserves an overnight if you want it to be a weekend rather than a long lunch. Official Tasmanian destination pages cover the town and valley; stay there for opening information.
It is a good first Hobart weekend if you have limited driving appetite. It is a poor extra after a Tasman Peninsula day.
Derwent Valley
Up-river, the Derwent Valley is hops country, historic towns and a different inland weather. Two days fit a valley base and one park or township loop. If you are collecting waterfalls, you are already in Parks Tasmania territory — alerts first, photographs second.
Tasman Peninsula
The Tasman Peninsula is cliffs, bays and a historic precinct that Tasmania is internationally known for. Official pages separate the landscape from any one site. A weekend here is the peninsula: a base, one clifftop walk you have checked, and time in the historic area without treating it as a timed ticket in this article.
Do not add Bruny. The water you see is not the same crossing.
East Coast
The East Coast — including well-known parks and towns farther north — is a ribbon. From Hobart it can be a weekend if it is the only weekend. Freycinet and neighbouring coast need the road and a base. They do not need a Huon morning.
If your two days are already promised to Bruny or the peninsula, let the East Coast wait.
A two-day rhythm from Hobart
Southern weather turns. Ferries cancel. Alpine conditions sit not far from orchard blossom. Before you leave:
- pick one official region
- if Bruny, lock the ferry
- check Parks Tasmania for the walk you think is the point
- check bom.gov.au for wind as well as rain
Weather at the edge of the Southern Ocean
Hobart weekends are wind-aware weekends. A still CBD morning can sit next to a cancelled Bruny crossing or a closed clifftop. Check the Bureau of Meteorology for coastal wind if you are island- or peninsula-bound, and for inland showers if you are Huon- or Derwent-bound. Mountain weather on kunanyi / Mount Wellington is not valley weather.
Winter and summer are both workable if the region matches the clothes you packed. Do not pack for four landscapes.
Getting there
Valley and peninsula trips are road trips. Bruny is a ferry plus island roads. The East Coast is a longer sealed run that consumes Saturday if you let it. Discover Tasmania and the official ferry information are the live sources. If you flew from the mainland that morning, you have already spent a slice of the two days; pick the closest region that still feels like leaving town.
Then use the shared method on planning a weekend away. Hobart will still be under the mountain on Sunday. The region you chose will be more itself if you only asked it for two days. Tasmania rewards the traveller who subtracts a corridor. If you are flying in and out in the same two days, prefer Richmond and the Coal River or the Huon over an East Coast ribbon that will spend Sunday on the highway.
Questions
Direct answers
Where can I go for a weekend from Hobart?
Stay south and close: the Huon Valley, Bruny Island, Richmond and the Coal River, the Derwent Valley, or the Tasman Peninsula. Discover Tasmania maps these around Hobart. The East Coast is optional only if you treat it as the whole trip.
Is Bruny Island a day trip?
It can be, but a weekend is the honest version. The ferry sets Saturday and Sunday. Wildlife, beaches and the island’s own distances need the overnight.
Can I see Freycinet in two days from Hobart?
Only as a focused East Coast weekend, not as an add-on to Bruny or the Huon. Freycinet and the wider East Coast sit far enough that the road is part of the two days.
Do I need a car?
For valleys and the peninsula, a car is the usual tool. Bruny still assumes you have thought about island transport after the ferry. Check Discover Tasmania and the ferry operator’s official information for the current picture.
Next step
Shape the two days before you leave.
A weekend away holds together when you pick one region, confirm park and weather notices, and leave Sunday with room to get home.
